About Us

Meet The Dering Family
Welcome to "Hopecrest Cotons". We are not a kennel. We are a Morgantown, WV family of 5 with our dogs. Our name comes from our lovely neighborhood,  "Hopecrest",  which is perched at the top of a hill in Morgantown's historic South Park. Our dogs are pets in our home and the only time they see a cage, crate or x-pen is at night at bedtime or when we are running errands. The rest of the time they are running around the house playing with our children, outside on our gated, covered back porch, curled up in the sunroom with a ray of sunshine warming them through the french doors, or running in our walled back yard.
My husband, Alex, is  a former Fortune 500 executive, and is recently retired after divesting primary ownership of a contracting company in Atlanta, GA.  I have been home with our children since their birth and have been lucky to have the opportunity to focus my full attention on my children my dogs and our home.
We have three beautiful children: 16 year old Andrew, 12 year old Adeline, and  10 year old Alexander. Our children play with our dogs and our puppies and we feel that this enhances their lives as they learn care, responsibility and empathy. It also enhances the lives of our puppies as they are played with and cuddled. Andrew earns spending money in the summers traveling with me to dog shows as my assistant. We have had Cotons since our youngest children were still in diapers!  Adeline would live in the puppy play pen with them if I let her... the first words out of her mouth in the morning when we have a litter are "Mommy, can we go play with our babies?"   The Dering children have joined us in the ring as junior handlers.  They have actively shown our dogs and are always excited to travel with mom to a new place! Part of the fun of summer is packing up and seeing what town we will show in next!  We have even added our niece to the mix on occasion.
Also added to our dog show "family" has been professional handler Harry Bennett.  We know that when our dogs are on the road with Harry they are treated like family and they receive the same level of care and affection that they do here at home!  Harry, with his vast experience and accomplishments in AKC has also been a wonderful educator and voice for the Coton as we entered the Non-Sporting group in 2014!
I often  wonder when my budget for dog grooming supplies began getting larger than my salon bill...and vacations began to be based on where the best shows were.  We have traveled all over the US and Europe to chase the big entries and compete with the best of the best!  We had the top AKC Coton in 2013, 2014 and 2015... We started 2016 with Elvis in Number 1 until August when unforeseen circumstances cut his 2016 special career short.  His daughter Mimi is currently number one all breed now in 2017!
I am blessed to have a full life and I am SO HAPPY that I have the opportunity to share Cotons with you and your family! I hope that your Hopecrest Coton adds as much joy and love to your lives as they have ours!
